NYSC: 8 New Changes Every Undergraduate Should Know

The Federal Government has approved major reforms to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). This is the first comprehensive review of the scheme since it was established in 1973. We have made available all the key highlights of the reforms that every undergraduate and prospective corps members should know before the changes are implemented.

Below are the key changes approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC):

1. Orientation Camp Extended to Six Weeks
The orientation programme will now last six weeks instead of the current three weeks.

2. Orientation Programme Divided into Three Phases
The six-week orientation camp will be structured as follows:

First Two Weeks

  • Civic responsibility
  • National values
  • Leadership development

Second Two Weeks

  • Career mapping
  • Basic accounting and financial literacy
  • Business planning
  • Access to finance
  • Structured career engagement programmes

Final Two Weeks

  • Specialised training based on each corps member’s selected stream, academic background, and skill profile.

3. Introduction of 11 Specialised NYSC Streams
Corps members will be required to choose one of the following streams during registration:

  • Agric Corps
  • Medical Corps
  • Education Corps
  • Tech and Digital Corps
  • Legal Corps
  • Public Service Corps
  • Infrastructure Corps
  • Green Corps
  • Enterprise Corps
  • Creative Economy Corps
  • Paramilitary and Security Corps

Corps members will receive specialised training in their chosen stream during the final phase of the orientation programme.

4. Security-Conscious Deployment
The government will now take prevailing security conditions into account when deploying corps members across the country.

5. Civilian Leadership for NYSC
The NYSC will be headed by a civilian Director-General, while the military will continue to provide security support for the scheme.

6. New NYSC Uniform
A redesigned NYSC uniform reflecting professionalism and national pride will be introduced.

7. Passing-Out Parade to Be Replaced
The traditional Passing-Out Parade (POP) will be replaced with a new graduation ceremony.

8. Improved Camp Standards
A national grading and certification system will be introduced to improve and standardise facilities and services across NYSC orientation camps nationwide.

The Federal Government has directed the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Ministry of Youth Development to begin the process of amending the NYSC Act and relevant regulations to give legal backing to the reforms.

According to the government, the reforms are aimed at making the NYSC more relevant to current national needs, equipping graduates with practical career skills, improving security, and enhancing the overall impact of the scheme on youth development and nation-building.
