ASUU suspends strike, announces resumption of academic activities

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called-off its eight-month strike. It was gathered that the decision was reached at the end of the National Executive Council meeting which was held at the ASUU secretariat in Abuja. A member of ASUU-NEC who spoke to newsmen after the meeting stated that the suspension of the strike was based on last week’s ruling of the Court of Appeal which asked the union to obey an order of the National Industrial Court.

The ASUU president while officially announcing the suspension of the strike stated that the leadership of the union decided to suspend the strike strike action embarked upon on February 14 following the appeals from the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), and in recognition of the efforts of Hon. Gbajabiamila (Speaker of the House of Representative), and other well-meaning Nigerians. He however added that the issues that led to the strike action are yet to be satisfactorily addressed.

It named some of the issued as,”funding for revitalisation of public universities; Earned Academic Allowances; Proliferation of public Universities; Visitation Panels/Release of White Papers and University Transparency and Accountability Solution, UTAS, as a broad spectrum software to stop illegality and provide for an alternative payment platform in the university system.”

Now that ASUU has suspended Strike, When will Universities Resume?

According to ASUU, the suspension of the strike takes effect from today October 14th, 2022. This means that schools are free to announce their resumption dates as from today. Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) and the University of Port-harcourt (UNIPORT) have already announced today October 14th as its resumption date while Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (UNIZIK) and Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU) have announced Monday October 17th as its resumption date for commencement of academic activities.

So the resumption date for each school will depend on the decision of the management and senate of the different schools. However, from all indications, almost all public universities will resume by next week.
