JAMB has admitted that the performance of candidates in this year’s UTMEiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) is poorer than what was recorded within the past three years. The JAMB Registrar, Is-haq Oloyede, confirmed this on Saturday evening while appearing on a live programme on a Nigerian Television Authority’s (NTA) programme tagged ”Weekend File.”
Mr Oloyede, who blamed the development on the truncation of the academic calendar due to the rampaging coronavirus pandemic, also listed what he described as peculiar environmental factors in Nigeria such as insecurity, among others.
He said the result is a true reflection of the country’s state of education, saying “somebody should be surprised if there is no such an effect on the students’ performance.”
He, however, cautioned critics that the performance would not affect the chances of the candidates in securing admission to their chosen higher institutions, saying the UTME is a ranking examination and not an achievement test.
He said a ranking test is likened to a race where sprinters are ranked based on the time they reach the touchline.
”But in an achievement test, you would have determined the pass mark even before the test. That is, you have something like scoring 50 percent stands for “C” or scoring 40 percent represents “D,” and so on like that. Promotion examination to another class in a school is a ranking examination but at the certification level, such as senior school certificate examinations, what we have are achievement examinations.
“So, as far as UTME is concerned, it is a ranking examination. Therefore, there is neither pass nor failure, because it is not the UTME that qualifies its candidates for admission. Between 10 and 15 percent of the candidates who seek admission through JAMB don’t even sit for the examination, and they even start in 200 level based on their A-level. But if you score 400 in UTME and you do not have five credits in SSCE, then you are not qualified for admission.”
He said UTME only became necessary because the number of those who are eager to get admitted into the higher institution in the country is more than the number of the available spaces, “so we are conducting the UTME to rank them.”

Let them hold the result, they just release our sit number not the scored we obtained during exams, writing JAMB in this country is just wasting of time. How could over 500, 000 out of 1.3 million candidates get below 180 marks? And how could less than 500 candidates have 300 marks? How’s that possible?
When JAMB told us last week that they wanted to examine and review the results before releasing them, we didn’t know they wanted to dash and crush the hope of most candidates who wrote this exam.
After the NIN Profile Code Tragedy and Catastrophe in which over 1 million potential candidates could not register and therefore lost the chance to write the exam, JAMB released a result that is shocking, devastating, appalling, soul-crushing, waterloo-inducing, and Machiavellian in crumbling and crashing and crunching the hopes and quest of most candidates??. In 2020, 2.1 million wrote the exam. In 2021, only 1.3 million wrote it because of the unfortunate NIN & profile code troubles and the incompetent parochial sadist heading JAMB.
Many candidates wrote the exam in JAMB centers that suffered network failures, hitches and glitches that jambing JAMB acknowledge but did not apologies for or rectify. And affected students were not rescheduled. Most of these students failed the exam.
Must everything in this country be sorrowful?? Why did JAMB have to remove marks from candidates’ scores? Why did JAMB have to arbitrarily use negative marking to eliminate candidates from their dream school? Why? Why? I’ve been comforting thousands of candidates online since yesterday. I’m traumatized at the wickedness of our country!
JAMB has not come out to apologies for their incompetent and horrific handling of profile code which made candidates to lose millions of naira in their frantic and hysteric efforts to register. So many candidates were unable to register for the exam.
This result is unacceptable, wicked, and devastating in impact. Even candidates who got 300+ last year did not mostly reach 200 this year. No be juju be that?

As much as we know that many students are not always serious, we also know THAT SOME EGREGIOUS INJUSTICE AND POLITICS HAVE TAKEN PLACE IN THE CONDUCT OF THiS EXAM. Nigeria will not know peace and progress if we treat our children and youth like rags who deserve the worst.
We know marks have been deducted and that candidates have been failed in an unjustifiable manner.
Undear JAMB, most of these candidates did not fail. YOU FAILED THEM. THAT IS WICKED, UNJUST, & EVIL.
The JAMB REGISTRAR MUST APOLOGISE FOR AND CORRECT THESE CALLOUS ACTIONS FROM JAMB AND RELEASE THE RIGHT RESULT OF THESE CANDIDATES.
This oppression and repression must end.
