JAMB 2021 Cut-Off Marks: 6 Things All candidates Should Know

You must have already known that JAMB has abolished the idea of setting general cut-off marks for Universities, Polytechnics, Colleges of Education, IEI’s. This gives the institutions the authority to set any cut-off mark they deem fit. This was one of the decisions taken at the 2021 JAMB policy meeting.

Whatever may be the case, the question is how does all this affect the candidates seeking admission. Below are 6 things you need to know about JAMB cut-off marks.

6 Things You Need To Know About New JAMB Cut-off Marks

1. As it stands, institutions will still set their own cut-off marks which is the least score you should have to qualify for their Post-UTME screening. It was recommended that Universities should not go below 120 and Polytechnics and Colleges of Education should not go below 100.

2. This means a good number of universities will set their cut-off marks lower than 160 especially private universities and public universities that are less competitive. In the same way, some polytechnics may set their cut-off marks below 120 and so on.

3. This will give an opportunity to candidates with lower JAMB scores (below 160) but still desire to study in a university to do so. As some university has already indicated that they will reduce their cut-off marks to 140.

4. Competitive schools especially universities like UNIBEN, UI, UNILAG etc will most likely still have a cut-off mark of 200 and above. This is because they have a high number of applicants every year. So to help them to easily screen the number of applicants, they will have to set their cut-off mark high.

5. So if your JAMB score is not well above 200 and the course and institution you chose during JAMB registration is a competitive one, it will be in your best interest to change to another school or course that has a lower admission cut-off mark so you can stand a chance of securing admission.

6. UTME score is not the sole determinant of the placement of candidates into tertiary institutions. Other parameters are Post-UTME /Post -A/ L qualifications screening/test score; O/L grade score; and in some cases, physical test.
