The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has disclosed that it will deploy soldiers in turbulent areas especially in the North-east in order to beef up security for the conduct of the 2017 UTME.
This was disclosed in statement made available by the head of information, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Dr Fabian Benjamin.
According to the statement, this development is an aftermath of the meeting between JAMB Registrar, Professor Is-haq O. Oloyede and Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai in Abuja.
It said the board had formed a common synergy with the army to secure the Computer Based Test (CBT) centres with a view to having a hitch free examination for the 2017 UTME.
On his part, the Army General, General Buratai has stated that some of the points raised the JAMB registrar were not only safe but habitable adding that normalcy, particularly in the Northeast had returned. Nevertheless, he promised to deploy troop for more surveillance and protection during the 2017 UTME.
The registrar also disclosed in the statement that 1.237 million candidates have already registered for the 2017 UTME and stated that over 678 centres across the country will be used for the conduct of 2017 UTME against the 650 CBT centres that were used last year.
For candidates whose exam centres will be in riverine areas, JAMB said it has reached a collaboration with the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)-producing company to air lift candidates that will sit for their examination is such CBT centres.
He mentioned that the reason for ‘capturing’ candidates’ ten fingers in biometric registration is to forestall incidence of multiple registrations that characterized previous years of UTME registration.
